2021 TWGHs Kap Yan Directors' College: Student Drone Flight and Video Editing Course

At TWGHs Kap Yan Directors' College, we delivered a comprehensive drone flight and video editing course. The course focused on developing students' drone operation skills, from basic flight operations to professional video editing, allowing students to learn and practise the entire process of aerial filming and post-production.

The course totalled 10 hours across 4 sessions, structured in the following phases:

Phase 1: Drone Technology and Tello EDU Operation Training

We first introduced students to basic drone technology and related STEM knowledge. Students then learned and practised using the Tello EDU drone. This phase focused on developing students' understanding of basic drone operations and Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department drone usage regulations.

Phase 2: Professional Drone Operation Training

In the second phase, students learned to operate the professional DJI Mavic series drones. We provided detailed instruction on the DJI Go 4 app, GPS, VPS, IMU, RTH, battery management and other professional drone functions and operation techniques. Students also practised cinematic camera movements and filming techniques in preparation for their themed production.

Phase 3: Themed Production and Video Editing

In the final phase, students carried out themed production within the school campus, using drones to film various scenes of their school. After filming, students used iPad for video editing, including trimming, audio mixing, adding subtitles, transitions and colour grading. This phase allowed students to experience the complete process from filming to post-production.

Through this course, students not only learned drone operation techniques but also mastered the basic workflow and skills of video production. We believe this learning experience will have a lasting impact on their future learning and development.
